I can relate to your child's fear. Our eldest daughter was attacked in a campground by two loose dogs. One dog opened his mouth so wide that he couldn't close it but every tooth broke the skin on her thigh. He returned and took two chunks out. We were terrified of Rabies. We were traveling and had to visit the Flying Doctor station. They told us there is no rabies in Australia. We slowly introduced dogs that we could trust. When back in Canada, we got a lab and then 5 beardies followed suit. She loves dogs now. I wish we had heard of Peter! He sounds like a miracle worker.

What a great picture! I chose to get a Beardie after talking to a woman who had her Beardie in an agility class with my mom's terriers. I was looking for a dog that would be intelligent and fun-loving. I wanted a dog that either did not shed or was a minimal shedder, and was told that Beardies are minimal shedders. I also loved the look of the breed. This woman told me her dog was smart, bouncy, a great companion, and a comedian. I could tell just from watching them together in class that he had a great personality. I was sold.

I wanted to rescue an older dog that needed a home. So once I decided I wanted a Beardie, I started looking for a rescue. I found Cooper on petfinder.com at a shelter in Colorado. I drove five hours with my mom the very next day to get him. And ... well, you get the idea - "happily ever after." :-) He's the perfect dog for me. Sweet, affectionate, VERY loyal, smart, intuitive, funny (really, he makes me laugh at least once a day), bossy (but still obedient), and beautiful. I understand that Beardies are not for everyone with their bouncy muddy feet and long hair that requires brushing, but I cannot image living without one ever again.

Hi Everyone, When my husband was a young boy, he had a dog named Ollie. He loved Ollie dearly and when the family had to move to Austrailia, for some reason they had to leave Ollie behind. My husbands heart was broken into little bits. When we married he wanted a dog. I was never allowed a dog by my anal & clean Mother. We had to have the right dog for us. We bought a dog book and proceeded to look through it in a pub one day. Page by page, reading about each dog, its needs, if it sheds which may not be good with my allergies, if it is a barker etc. Suddenly!! There was Ollie! He resembled a Bearded Collie so much! The family never knew what kind of dog he was, just that he was a dear. Philip had a void since losing Ollie and went forward looking for a breeder. All the stats in the book were ideal for us. We had the perfect home, with two young children, a huge yard, and lots of love to give an addition to the family.
We got Nicholaus "Nick" to be apart of our family. He was the best person I ever knew. We got Katherine "Katie" who was the sweetest person I ever knew. We got Lacey who is the most communicative pup I know and Marty who is the biggest love bug I have the pleasure of having in my family.

Anyone who has ever owned a bearded collie knows the answer. The reason for me is their cheeky enquiring personality, a fantastic nature and at the end of a long day they always love to cuddle and be one of the family.

For me it was because they are the closest breed to a "mutt" that you can get and still know exactly what you are getting! They scrub up beautifully of course but, let's be honest, most of the time they look like ragbags - albeit beautiful ones!

Their temperament is great, they never really grow up, they are fun, active, family loving, people loving, dog loving all round sociable dogs. What's not to fall in love with?

I own a labrador and am on the 3rd of my border collies. My friend raved about beardies but i was adamant Borders were best.My friend got a beardie from Beardie Aid .I was impresssed by his temperament. He needs to work i said hed make a great Blue Cross dog!I became an educational volunteer using her dog (temperament tested). She then got a beardie for showing.I was offered my beardie from southern Beardie Aid and havent looked back!At 13 he is a registered blue cross dog doing local visits ,has passed Good Citizen Bronze with my son who was 10 at the time ,silver with me and his beardie primary working test(He was 11 when we got him!) He is healthy and confident has a great sense of fun and a lovely temperament. He is a good all rounder.I love my other dogs too but the lab will give agility a go but is better at obedience,My border is good at most thingsbut is not as steady on the stay and is bored when showing as he is a doing dog and lively My beardie is just game for a laugh be it fun shows agility(I wouldnt ask him to jump at his age but sometimes he does it himself over sleepers logs etc) or behaving at a pet service /school.My next dog will be a Beardie!!!!

I was about 6 when my family got our first Beardie. We had had a mutt before then and my parents were told to check out Wheaten Terriers because she resembled one but their research also lead them to Beardies. My family needed one that was hypo-allergenic as a result of my dad's (and later my) allergies. We went to a breeders to check out the Beardies and my parents just fell in love! We love everything abour them- how kind, gentle, intelligent, quirky, playful, cheerful...they are. We have had such an amazing experience with them and we will never consider any other breed. We got our second Beardie when Misty (our first one) was two years old. My parents started to joke around that us kids were two years apart and the dog was two so it was time to get another one. My parents called the breeder expecting to have to wait months but they actually had exactly what we wanted that was available for adoption. We went out to visit but as I am sure everybody knows you just can't look at a puppy. We told them we would be back the next day to pick her up after we bought the needed supplies (we had literally just given our cage away that same week). We ended up going back and getting her that very night. Misty has since passed on (in February of 2008 due to bone cancer) and Stormy is 13. I couldn't imagine life without them and we all still miss Misty but she had a long, healthy and happy life. Stormy is still hanging on and is as sweet and sassy as ever. I can't wait to get home for Christmas break to see her again (I go to University about 8 hours from home).

Beardies, wot can u say, except they win you over with that great big black nose, masses of scruffy hair, and the most gorgeous eyes, when you get to see them, and under neath, a lovely dog with the most amazing brain, and great personality, and every one different, my two are like chalk and cheese, the girl , always scheming, always one, no , two steps ahead of max, who just takes every thing in his stride, so laid back, she knows exactly wots wot, you cant fool her on any thing, even as to which way to walk up the woods, where as max, its yea wot ever, i,m easy!! My ellie has had a problem with her right shoulder for a year now, and walks vary slow, until she sees somthing, and then off she goes, but she cant run like other dogs, but i dont think she minds, as this way she gets to control the walk!!!!!!

I knew I had seen this breed in the movies or on TV but never knew the name. I researched and finally came up with the Beardie! I had no idea what a wonderful personality they have. Myles is such a love; quirky, fun, silly, persistant and intelligent. And why is it they're like potato chips? You can never have just one! Myles is almost 2 and we're getting that Beardie itch again. I think the only thing that makes me think twice is the grooming. Hopefully when my new grooming table arrives it will make that chore a bit easier.

well we did not exactly select Julio. He selected us. we were looking for a very active dog to be a skate partner with my hubs and girls. we wanted a rescue. so off to the pound we went. we looked at a few large dogs. but this guy was really great. mr personality and very submissive. he had a terrrible cough so we had to wait a couple of days. we went back he remembered us so we brought him home as a foster. he will never leave i went down a couple of days after we brought him hom andthat was that. he is great. he "sings" he snuggles he bounces he is great!
